Ballet Dance Class
painting of a woman enjoying a painting by Edgar Degas
G. Boersma
acrylic on masonite
59" x 48" or 150 x 120 cm
2018
I just finished my latest large scaled painting of a woman enjoying Ballet Class by Edgar Degas.
From the 1870s until his death, Degas's favorite subjects were ballerinas at work, in rehearsal or at rest, and he tirelessly explored the theme with many variations in posture and gesture.
Here the class is coming to an end – the pupils are exhausted, they are stretching, twisting to scratch their backs, adjusting their hair or clothes, an earring, or a ribbon, paying little heed to the inflexible teacher, a portrait of Jules Perrot, a real-life ballet master.
Ballet Class will be shown publicly for the first time during the summer show at gallery Twee Pauwen in The Hague. If you're interested in purchasing this painting just let me know!
