Usually my paintings all have multiple layers, a lot of meaning and can be explained in many ways, but to be honest there's isn't a whole lot of that in Art Movements.
If there's any meaning to it, it's that all different types of art movements are thrown together in one big heap and reduced to a low price tag. Then again one could see it as a summon to get acqainted with the great art from the past if you haven't done so already.
But like I said I wasn't too concerned with meaning this time around. I just painted it because when I saw this scene in a local bookstore the colors really spoke to me. It's just a beautiful picture to me.
It was a huge challenge too. In the first place it was pretty difficult to 'copy' these great works of art, but doing it in completely different styles within the same painting was pretty challenging too.
There's the art nouveau style of Mucha, expressionism, renaissance painting, sculpture and even drawing. The latter was extremely challenging, besides the fact that it had to look old, painting a drawing is pretty tough!
Finally I still wanted it to look like I made it. All these different types of art and the painting still looks like one of mine. I thought that was pretty cool too, sure hope you think so too!
Art Movements can be seen at my show with my great-uncle Jopie Huisman from april 10 - nov 6, at Museum De Andere Kant, It Noard 5 in Workum. The show opens this saturday at 14.00 h. You're cordially invited to join me!
kind regards, Gerard
