This painting observes a woman engaged with Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol began creating the portraits just days after her death in 1962. The portraits explore themes of celebrity obsession, mass production, consumerism, and mortality. The repetition highlights both her omnipresence in the media, while the bright, saturated colors celebrate her glamour and iconic beauty.
They say that one picture is worth a thousand words, but to me Warhol showed that a thousand images might say nothing at all. By capturing a real person viewing this portrait, I tried to bring back the human element.
All the best, Gerard
